Get Ready for Your First MTB Marathon | Tips and Strategies

Maratón de MTB con un aficionado en la ruta

The world of mountain biking offers unique thrills and challenges that make it an addictive sport. If you're considering participating in an MTB marathon race, congratulations! You're about to embark on a grand and challenging adventure. Having dedicated many years to professional Downhill racing, it was only two years ago that I began my journey in these types of events. That's why I want to share some tips and strategies to best prepare and fully enjoy these kinds of events!

1. Set Realistic Goals:

Before you start your training, define your goals. Do you simply want to complete the race, or are you aiming for a specific time? Setting clear goals will help focus your training or preparation effectively. Keep in mind: wanting to finish is just as valuable as wanting a good time—it's a PERSONAL decision!

2. Plan Your Training Well:

Preparing for an MTB marathon requires discipline. Design a training plan that includes long-distance routes, high-intensity intervals, and endurance sessions. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts as the event date approaches. Go through this process mindfully and enjoy it!

3. Understand the Terrain You'll Compete On

Research the race route in advance. Understanding the terrain will allow you not only to adapt your physical preparation but also your bike. For this, diligently read the guides provided by the event organizer and try to contact people who have participated in previous editions. DON'T make the same mistakes I did; in some events, I was overconfident and had a hard time.

4. Choose the Right Bike

First, ensure your bike is in top condition. Then, consider the features of the route and make the necessary adjustments in time, so you can test its comfort and safety during your training. For instance, play with the tire pressure and suspension. However, beware! Don't think of making adjustments just a few days before the event or you'll suffer!

5. Nutrition and Hydration

During training and the race, nutrition and hydration are key. Consume appropriate foods and drinks before, during, and after long rides to maintain your energy levels and prevent dehydration. This topic has many variables to consider, so if you want to delve deeper, I invite you to watch this full video on my YouTube channel.

6. Positive Mindset

Your mind plays a crucial role in your success. Try to cultivate a positive mindset and keep your motivation high. Constantly visualize yourself successfully crossing the finish line, and never let your confidence wane. As long as you train and prepare well, there's no reason to dwell on the negative. Always aim to think positively and about the endless opportunities you have to achieve what you want.

And the last and most valuable piece of advice: enjoy the process!
